Civil Rights

Dhillon & Smith’s partners have won numerous awards for their leadership in several substantive civil rights disciplines. Partner Harmeet K. Dhillon was named one of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (“NAPABA”) “Best Under 40” attorneys in 2007, in part because of her leadership on civil rights issues, including free exercise of religion, free speech, and equal opportunity. Our firm devotes a substantial amount of time each year to pro bono advocacy on behalf of civil rights litigants, including victims of hate crimes as a result of their religion or national origin, employment applicants denied a job or promotion because of their articles of faith, and many others. We view it as our duty as members of the bar to give back to the communities that we serve and the communities from which we came, in order to provide access to justice for those who might not otherwise enjoy it. Beyond core civil rights issues, our firm’s partners have also served as leaders and have been recognized for their work on behalf of victims of domestic violence and legitimate political refugees fleeing murderous regimes, including refugees from Kashmir, Tibet, and Eritrea.
